hood scoop mod, good or bad?

We got bored at work today and deicded to make his hood scoop functional. we took his scoop off and cut a hole in the hood, then put the scoop back on but w/o the rubber block thingy in the front. so its a straight shot to his engine bay.

we also took of the heat sheild from under the top of the hood. he said he could feel the heat coming out big time when he got home. now is this a dumb or good idea?

I guess it could keep the engine a lil cooler and work as a heat extractors at times, but i dunno. I might do it on my stang so i figuered id ask if he ****ed anything up.

It really shouldn't hurt anything to remove heat from the engine bay.

Someone might tell you something about water when it rains. But your engine gets wet from underneath anyway....

Take a look at mysteed's and pintobeast's hoods.

Not to mention someone on this board made theirs functional and it flew off while racing. To cool down my car I installed a 160 T-stat and had the tuner set the program to turn the fan on at 170F. My car never exceeds 179F in Houston stop and go driving.

HMM....I was thinking of drilling holes in mine

in that Black honeycomb front. Then putting a screen in behind it to be cleaned every now and then. but now maybe I won't.

is it just held down with adhesive? If so I'd bet adding a few screws/bolts would help to keep it from flying off.

umm, I think this fits better in bolt-ons than it does in engine tech, so I am going to move it there.

u take the heat sheild off and its maybe 6 bolts u have to undo from underneth. so its already bolted down, but we did lose one bolt doing this mod.

Atmospheric pressures 1 inch above your hood aren't all that high to begin with.

Think of it this way, since this is the most visual example I can think of. When there is water on your hood and you're driving along, the beads of water aren't moving as fast as you're traveling forward... not nearly as fast. That is about 1/8". 1"-2 inches, above the hood the pressures are slightly higher, but you're not talking about 100 pounds of wind resistance either.

If you're going to do it, bolt it down in conjunction with automotive grade double sided tape (and for the love of god, trim it to match perfectly). The bolts will keep it secure, the tape will cushion the two for a water tight seal (except for the open front).

These are from before I really cleaned it up and made it smooth. I don't have any problems with rain but every once in a while a douche bag will throw some paper in there. Keeps things a good bit cooler though.

Even reinforced I've seen them fly off if they get enough force under them. If there is nothing but the regular mounts holding it on, I would strongly advise placing the honeycomb panel back on for support.
At the very least, you could drill out some of the holes in the honeycomb panel to retain it's original intent, plus it would reinforce the mounting at the same time.

I don't know if I have any direct pictures of the pins but they go where the front hood bumpers go. You just unscrew those and bolt in the pins. Ill try to snap a pic on my lunch break or something

it really wont do much other than let rain water in... my hood scoops are designed to flow the most air they can on the hood and were put exactly where they are for that very reason... and they dont do much

They do more than you think. If you have a thermo gun, block the vents one day and take the car through the paces. Then take a temp reading. Do it again with the vents open and you will see a noticeable difference.

yep, just took off the lining under the hood, popped out the plastic honeycomb and then cut out the fiberglass behind it.

Even if you didn't 'think' it would happen; there's still a probable amount of failure. So bolt it down anyways. I mean, you wouldn't use a used t-lok with 50k miles if you could have a new one for only 5 bucks more?

lol worst mod ever. The previous owner did it to my gt and the scoop flew off on the freeway. IT was glued down and bolted and screwed and it still flew off. Then since i had a hole in the hood already i got the cdc shaker system. SO yeah, it WILL fly off
